2025 Ford Mustang Engine Options & Specs

After decades, the Ford Mustang continues to hold its own at the top of the sports car class. If you want exciting handling and potent engines, the Mustang's aerodynamics and powertrain options compete with the best. With several engine and trim configurations available, every sports car driver is guaranteed to have their needs met.

2025 Mustang Engine Options and Specs

The base Mustang has a 2.3L four-cylinder turbocharged engine that pumps out 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, plenty of power to satisfy most auto enthusiasts.

If you opt for a Ford Mustang GT, you'll get a 5.0L V-8 powerhouse that churns out 480 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque. If that's not quite enough for you, an upgraded version of the V-8 is available that's capable of putting out 500 horsepower. You'll want this engine if you plan to hit the racetrack.

The standard transmission is a 10-speed automatic, which provides smooth gear changes for most day-to-day driving scenarios. If you opt for the higher-powered GT, you can keep the automatic transmission or switch to a six-speed manual transmission. Many drivers prefer the responsiveness and extra control that comes with the manual transmission, especially for high-performance racing and drives. Both transmissions provide power to the Mustang's rear-wheel-drive setup, which is standard throughout the 2025 Mustang lineup.

Acceleration and Fuel Economy

Unsurprisingly, the fully-loaded Mustang Dark Horse, which gets the upgraded V-8 engine, will let you experience the best acceleration times. It can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in a remarkable 4.1 seconds, according to tests by Car and Driver. The GT, which has the standard V-8 engine, comes in at just a 10th of a second slower at 4.2 seconds for the 0-to-60 mph dash. The base EcoBoost engine still achieves a very respectable 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds.

Fuel economy may not be top of your priority list if you're in the market for a sports car, but it's good to know that the Mustang's gas mileage numbers are strong. The EcoBoost engine can achieve up to 33 mpg on the highway and 22 mpg on city roads — solid numbers given the engine's power. The V-8 achieves up to 24 mpg on the highway and around 15 mpg on city roads, but you probably won't mind the lower fuel efficiency if you're focused on this powertrain's additional performance.

Driver Safety Tech

Ford equips the 2025 Mustang with a great range of driver-assistance tech to make your job behind the wheel a bit easier. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection combine to help you avoid collisions in an emergency.

The blind-spot monitor helps you keep track of drivers approaching you from awkward angles, and you can also benefit from standard lane departure warning and lane-keep assist when you're on the highway. Adaptive headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers round out the standard offerings, helping you to maintain good visibility under all conditions.

You can add helpful safety features, such as stop-and-go adaptive cruise control, to ensure you maintain a safe distance from other motorists. The driver attention monitor lets you know when it's time to take a break, and the traffic sign recognition feature projects key information about speed limits and other driving rules onto your display so you don't miss them.

If you want to ensure that secondary drivers can't take advantage of your Mustang's full capabilities, you're in control. The MyKey feature allows you to set speed limits and other restrictions on how your Ford is used when you're not behind the wheel.

2025 Ford Mustang Performance Enhancements & Trims

There are seven trims for the 2025 Ford Mustang. Ford added a limited-edition 60th Anniversary trim alongside the six trims that were offered last year. The standard six trims are EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, Dark Horse, and Dark Horse Premium.

You'll want to bear in mind the performance differences between trims too. The EcoBoost engines are equipped with the turbo-four engine, the GT trims with the standard V-8, and the Dark Horse trims with the upgraded V-8. GT and Dark Horse trims also allow you to choose the manual transmission.

In addition to the trims, performance upgrades are available throughout the lineup. These include enhancements such as a performance exhaust, a limited-slip rear differential, high-performance brakes, and upgraded front springs. Some trims also let you choose between a convertible or coupe body style, which can have a significant impact on your Mustang's practicality.

The range-topping Dark Horse trims also benefit from summer tires, upgraded chassis components, and adaptive dampers. These performance additions help with acceleration and handling on the road or racetrack.
